あらすじ
江戸の経師屋芳古堂に幼い頃から住み込み、兄弟以上の信頼関係と友情によって支えあってきた、表具職人の栄二とさぶ。ある日、栄二は得意先で高価な金襴の切れを盗んだといいう濡れ衣を着せられ、石川島の人足寄場に送られてしまう。さぶや栄二の許嫁・おすえは彼の無実を信じ、寄場を訪ねるが、復讐心に固まった栄二は彼らを寄せ付けない。時が経つにつれ、寄場での人間関係が、そんな栄二の心を変えていく。きっかけとなったのは、同心・岡安の「季節の花の香りを感じる心の余裕があるのか」という問いかけだった…
STORY
Eiji and Sabu are of the same age, and have been working together as live-in mounting craftsmen since they were kids. One day, Eiji is falsely charged with theft, and disappears. Sabu goes looking for him. Eiji is made to do forced labor in a work camp on the isle of Ishikawa. He distrusts people and keeps his feelings to himself. Even when Sabu discovers his whereabouts, Eiji hurls cold words at him. However, spurred by the people in the camp, Eiji opens up his heart bit by bit. At that moment, the island is hit by a typhoon. The laborers are released for seven days in order to find shelter, but Eiji says he will protect the camp together with the government officials, and gathers companions. Thanks to Eiji's efforts, the typhoon somehow passes, and Eiji finally returns to the regular world, where he is warmly welcomed by Sabu.

山本周五郎の傑作小説を、名古屋テレビの開局４０周年記念番組として製作、放映され大反響を呼んだ作品。OA後に、未放映カットを大幅に加えた劇場完全版として上映。「DEAD OR ALIVE」「殺し屋イチ」の監督・三池崇史が本格的な時代劇に始めて挑んだ青春映画。
